Earlier this week i had a follower from our community ask me to cover the topic of being possessed by deities. Which got me to thinking about my own personal experiences within my magickal practice. This is a topic both talked about within the community and not talked about. I don't know if its one of those things where its just hard to strike up in conversation or just the fear of how they will be perceived. This is something that is not new when it comes to spiritual paths. Alot of individuals will have a possession at least once within their practice. Now as if its a god/goddess or not is a whole other thing within its self, because there is a variation. When it comes to posession by a deity its a different experience altogether than of any other experience. This is far different than someone being taking over by force than from one being asked. Either way we are gonna take a look at what exactly our the stages of Deity Possession.
Step 1. Intention
When it comes to intention you may ask why this is important. Well possession isnt something that should be taken lightly . You must first ask yourself "What is the intention behind asking for this deity"? Along with what do you know about who it is that you are asking to take over you. Do you have trust in this deity? If not or if you just began your journey i would highly not recommend trying any of this. But as i say i am just someone to guide you not control you , So do as thee will. Just make sure this is not something that you are trying to do every time you want to do work. It has its physical and mental toll it can have over ones body. Just try to keep this in mind along with what your true intent is before trying anything of this nature.
Step 2. Invitation
This is the first step in our journey to being possessed by a deity and also a bit of a complicated one. During your meditation/ritual or trance work you can asked to be possessed to help lead you during your rites. But depending upon the deity and your relationship with the deity depends if the invitation has been accepted. Many of us have seen people who are new with a deity try such things. But it often ends up not working for them and they end up leaving that deity. So why is it that this works for some but now for all who call for them. The simple answer is "They do what they want", when it comes to any deity you dont just get to command them. Unlike demons or other spirits who deal in possession deities are picky. Imagine someone asking you to come over and you dont know who they are or have never spoken to them. You do not know the energy they carry nor the intentions they have in mind. Plus everyone knows when you work with a deity they have a certain thing they may demand when working with them. If all you are doing is want to use them and dont plan to offer anything up , they wont come to your beck and call. So before you give up on getting possessed by your deity , work with them.
Step 3. Acceptance
When it come to acceptance , How does one know if the deity has accepted the invitation ? It truly depends upon the individual and the deity they are working with . But here are a few signs of acceptance .
Feeling as if you are looking outward thru your eyes , but the physical actions you're seeing are not of your own free will.
A surge that starts from the tip of your head all the way towards your feet. This feeling will be super intense and to be honest is one of the hardest feelings to describe when it comes to this. Trust me when you feel it and have that wtf moment pop up in your mind you know.
The swirling affect is what i like to call a impression on ones soul. Its where you feel like you are swaying in and out of your body and swirling at the same time. Imagine it like a spiritual dance between you and the deity you are working with .
This one is one of the most common which is the blackout period. Where nothing that is said or done is remembered. This is one of the main reasons possession is done in groups rather than by ones self. Because depending upon who you are working with can depend on the outcome of events. Now with any possession their is a chance that the entity you are working with will not give up possession of the body. In cases like this it is normal for a exorcism to be performed. Hence why trust and having a team on hand is key.
Now even though these are the three steps i personally cover , i do have a few more things to say about it. When it comes to any possession keep in mind that your body now belongs to them during this time. So anything can happen and habits you don't normally partake in can happen. Such as but not limited to Drinking, Smoking and Sex during this time of possession. This is another reason why it is best to have a spiritual buddy or two on hand just in case . Because as we know most deities do not have a concept of our rules or moral way of life. So with this being said if you plan to try this with a deity make sure it is one you are comfortable with. One whom you have worked with for years and have built a understanding with each other. As always my friends stay safe and have fun in your spiritual practice.
